Genetic Support Awareness Week

Sunday 1st July to Saturday 7th July 2007

Living with a genetic condition is challenging.  People who are affected by a genetic condition may feel isolated and alone, that no one understands, or perhaps they do not yet know about the  services available to them (such as genetic counselling or support groups).  Genetic Support Awareness Week strives to raise awareness of genetic conditions and to support people affected by genetic conditions.

To celebrate Genetic Support Awareness Week, the Genetic Support Network of Victoria (GSNV) held several very successful activities including a family day, seminar and coffee morning.

Family Day - Sunday 1st July 2007

While it was cold outside, the atmosphere inside was very warm and inviting!  Held at the Maribyrnong Community Centre, this day was all about bringing together families affected by a genetic condition.

Kids – and big kids - were thrilled by storyteller Andy Wright’s breathtaking tales and expressive personality.  Several children had the chance to assist Andy tell the stories, acting out animal parts.

We thought the giant Snakes and Ladders would be popular with the kids, and many were amused to see some of the adults involved in very friendly rivalry.  Kids of all ages had the chance to uncover their inner artist, with the gingerbread person decorating and craft activities.  And of course, it was great to catch up with long-time friends, and welcome new people.

Family Health History Seminar – Wednesday 4th July

For many people affected by a genetic condition, it’s easy to lose sight of “other” conditions, such as cancer, diabetes and stroke.  However these conditions may still affect us or our loved ones.

At this great seminar at the Melbourne Town Hall, Dr Tiong Tan and genetic counsellor, Lisette Curnow, both from Genetic Health Services, provided a very interesting overview how the health of our relatives provides an insight into what we might expect for our own health, what information to look for and how to record this information for future generations.  They also reminded us that for some conditions, such as cancer, genetics isn’t the only factor…diet, lifestyle and habits such as smoking are also factors.

GSNV President, Carly Myers, discussed her life as a person affected by achondroplasia (a short stature condition, also known as dwarfism).  She spoke very openly about some of the challenges that she and her husband face as they consider their options for starting a family.

Following the fabulous speakers, everyone stayed on for supper and an opportunity to chat about what had been said amongst ourselves.

The seminar was proudly presented by the GSNV and Genetic Health Services Victoria.

Coffee Morning – Friday 6th July

While school holidays kept numbers down, the coffee morning went ahead.  Four people came along and shared their experiences with each other.

Display at RCH - Friday 29 June to Monday 9th July 2007

GSNV held a display in the foyer of the Royal Children’s Hospital.  Bright, colourful and informative, the posters provided general information about genetics, genetic conditions and accessing support, including quotes from families about the value of peer support.
